DJ Tomas
is a veteran of the Los Angeles and San Francisco DJ and music scenes
having lived and worked in both cities. He began DJing at age 16 on KSFH-FM
high school radio station and from there went on to a 7-year residency
at Los Angeles’s KXLU-FM 89.9.
While in LA, Tomas formed the Umoja Soundsystem DJ collective, broadcasted
reggae and experimental music shows on tastemaker college radio station
KXLU, and started a number of club nights (including the rare groove/hip-hop
night B-Side, the all-ages after-hours ambient club Goa Dub and his two-years-running
Umoja Jazz and Ragga lounge). Additionally, Tomas compiled CDs for Rhino
Records and Quango, wrote for underground bible Urb Magazine and held
numerous DJ residencies.
Relocating to San Francisco in 1996, Tomas continued to establish club
nights devoted to underground electronic genres, including the successful
Hedquarters, Static, pHusion and Overtone. Tomas began recording dance
music as Live & Direkt and later as Double Identity for labels such
as Ubiquity, Sunburn and K Records. In between constant DJing and production
work, Tomas is currently the editor of XLR8R Magazine.
Moving more into production realms, Tomas is working on a number of recordings
as Double Identity (Dub I.D.) and founded Voltage Music label in 2002.
