Since 1991 Andrew Jervis has played a big role
in the development of the San Francisco and West Coast electronic music
scene. In addition to being the A+R man for the influential and universally
respected Ubiquity Records he hosts the longest running electronic music
radio show in the Bay Area and has organized events featuring artists
from around the globe. As a DJ he is known worldwide for his unique and
eclectic selections of tunes new and old, pushing the musical envelope
while keeping the crowd moving.
Jervis moved to San Francisco from London in 1991. Armed with a crate
full of records, he got lucky by hooking up with Michael and Jody McFadin,
the owners of the Groove Merchant, scoring a job at the hippest record
store in town and consequently DJ gigs at clubs around the city.
At the Groove Merchant he sold tunes, breaks and beats to collectors,
DJ's and producers including the Beastie Boys, Q-Tip, Jamiroquai, House
of Pain, and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The store was also the
birth place for Luv N'Haight records, and later to mother label Ubiquity.
Moving on to become editor of On The One Magazine, Jervis helped pioneer
the USA's first music magazine dedicated to the burgeoning acid jazz,
electronic and club music scenes. During this time he also took over a
three hour slot on KUSF 90.3FM as host of the Friday Night Session. The
Session has now been on the airwaves for over 8 years and continues to
be the most vibrant forum for eclectic club music on the San Francisco
dial. Guests to the show have included Gilles Peterson, Kruder and Dorfmeister,
4 Hero, Rainer Truby, Mixmaster Morris, Kirk Degiorgio, P'taah, Koop,
Idjut Boys, Bugz In The Attic, Ayro, John Beltran, John Arnold, the Dublab
crew and many more.
During an interview on KUSF Jervis met local musician/producer Paul Scriver
and the two decided to get together in the recording studio. Their band
Better Daze released two CD's ("One Street Over" and "The
Remix Project") gaining critical acclaim particularly for their sublime
cover of The Stranglers' "Golden Brown".
During the mid-90s Jervis held down a three-year DJ residency at Nickie's
BBQ. Every Thursday he bought his own brand of jazz, Latin, new school
club music and rare groove to San Francisco's legendary lower Haight dive
bar/club. It was here that he teamed up with then doorman Dave Biegel
to form Bugs. Bugs released one full length album, which gained acclaim
in Spin, Rolling Stone, plus Bugs videos aired on MTV's AMP, and tracks
were played on numerous commercial radio stations. Bugs were nominated
for Best New Electronic/Dance Act by the California Music Awards and BAM
magazine declared "Infinite Syndrome" one of the best albums
of 1997. They remixed Epic band Hooverphonic twice, Sony act Morley, and
Q-Burns Abstract Message for Astralwerks. Other music releases for Jervis
include work with Jonah Sharp (Spacetime Continuum) as Quorum, and solo
releases/mixes as Caspule 150.
After finishing a 3 year stint as editor of On The One magazine in Christmas
1997, Jervis took a position at Ubiquity Records where he is currently
Vice President. It is here you will find him on a daily basis, pushing
the music he loves.
Successes for Ubiquity under Jervis eyes and ears include the New Latinaires
series, for which he enlisted the likes of Jazzanova, Carl Craig, Joe
Claussell, and Maurice Fulton to create original tracks and remixes. He
has also orchestrated the signing of the several top electronic acts from
around the globe including Roy Davis Jr, P'taah (aka Chris Brann), Beatless,
Cuica, John Beltran, John Arnold, Zero dB, and Kirk Degiorgio. He also
released a mixed CD for Ubiquity called Love From The Sun. Other projects
he has A+R’d or compiled include California Soul, the Rewind series,
Black Renaissance and Don Cunningham’s “Something For Everyone”.
Through his DJ career he has played in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle,
Chicago, Detroit, New York, Vancouver, Toronto, London, Brighton, Manchester,
Paris, Vienna, Munich, Zurich, and many more. He has played alongside
DJs like King Britt, Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, UFO, Kruder and Dorfmeister,
Armand Van Helden, Miguel Migs, Bougie Solitaire, the Thievery Corporation,
Mark Rae, The Next Men, Riton, Minus 8, Ben Watt, and even had to turn
to down David Bowie to open up for David Byrnes Talking Heads in Las Vegas!
